Actions/Decisions

01.JUL-23-2022.  All present indicated their interest to {re} awaken the Brown County Club and return to an active status - So We're Back!  Dave Redding will look over the old club records and confirm what we need to put in place to move forward in an official capacity and present that in August.   The group mentioned appointing a President and Vice and a Treasurer.  We talked about dues and if we should put together a grant request to the ARRL opportunity.  Noel and Mike offered their experience to help us make sure we have the proper documents in place, club leaders identified, and we're following any required process for our monthly meetings.

02.JUL-23-2022.   Dave Redding will ask Christy Wrightsman to reserve a room at CRC for the 4th Saturday of each month at 9AM.

03.JUL-23-2022.    Brad Stone will advance W9BCI.ORG to the next level and set up mechanisms for us to communicate important information, upload our club documents, highlights of activities in Brown County, links to other important activities in nearby counties.  Personally, I'm very excited about our website as it will serve as an introduction to many individuals that may be considering becoming active in our club.

04.JUL-23-2022.   We should advertise and offer a testing opportunity after our Aug 27th meeting, targeting those that have difficulty getting to Columbus or Bloomington testing opportunities and also any students that would like to take the test again.  Dave Redding will work with Scott Nelson & Matt Ferrell & Rick Woehlecke to see what we can offer.

05.JUL-23-2022.   The Club wanted to hold a weekly SIMPLEX net on 146.46.  After a brief discussion, we felt 8:30 PM on Thursday after the local ARES nets would be a good time to try this new Brown County Simplex Net.  K9VM / Rick was recruited to be Net Control.

Working Draft Framework of A/Our Charter - Key Focus Areas
  • Continuity of Assets
  • Supporting Emergency & Preparedness of and for Brown County
  • Recruitment & Outreach of New Amateur Radio Operators
  • Fellowship & Social Events
  • Support & Connections w/ other Amateur Radio communities

Discussion of Draft Charter Framework

Continuity of Assets - The active club can serve a critical role to maintain control and ownership as individuals come and go ...
  • Repeater Frequencies our members are Trustees. 2m/440 Repeaters, GRMS Repeater, others?
  • Equipment - individuals have been maintaining equipment with their own personal funds for several years.
  • W9BCI & N9BCI call signs  (K9VM and N9VDT have these call signs and are holding them for Brown County interests)
  • W9BCI URL
  • Adding new capabilities and features to our repeaters. We talked about the ZELLO app.   There is clearly an interest in digital modes, so we will continue to discuss this and determine what, if anything we can do to help those among us that use or wish to learn more about digital modes.

Supporting Emergency & Preparedness for Brown County
  • ARES NET 7:30 PM Thu Weekly (Brown).     147.300 MHz, +offset, 136.5 Tone
  • ARES NET 8:00 PM  Thu Weekly (Monroe).  146.640 MHz, -offset, 136.5 Tone
  • NEW Weekly Simplex NET Thu @ 8:30 PM Eastern, 146.46 MHz.  NCS: K9VM.

  • Host Weather Spotter Training, annually
    • Sam Lashley
      Warning Coordination Meteorologist
      National Weather Service Indianapolis
      6900 W. Hanna Ave.
      Indianapolis, IN 46241
      317-856-0361 ext. 726

  • Develop Plan for Civil Alert System and Secure Brown County Support. We talked with Don/N7GTA at length at what it would take to get coverage county wide.  N9VDT / Dave suggested we should get a plan together in the next week to two weeks so we can ask the County Council to consider funding this with the LIT Public Safety Fund and give W9BCI control over this system and maintenance.

Recruitment & Outreach of New Amateur Radio Operators

Brown County School Amateur Radio Clubs.  The middle school club will continue.  Dave Redding is still waiting for Trent Austin's approval to form a similar after school club for the 9-12 graders.   Dave & Matt will pull together a strawman of labs and demos we aspire to offer for the upcoming school year, so anyone that has a passion on any of these topics and join us or lead that topic with the school club(s).

Mentor/Coach young, new Technicians into the Welcome Net

Offer local Amateur Radio Testing

Offer Test Prep & Tutoring for those working on their next level license

Presence at County Fair.  Get the word out.  Fundraising?

Hold workshops to invite new operators to come in for help and possibly even find an ELMER for these new operators?

Fellowship & Social Events
  • ARRL Field Day 2023

  • Fall of 2022, Local Version of Field Day  (Brad's QTH offer - so let's move quick before he withdraws the invite)

  • Swap Meet.  No volunteers stepped forward.  We think late Sep, 1st week or so of Oct would be an excellent time to host a swap meet.  We talked about the parking lot here at the Brown County High School, the Conference Facility at the Seasons, County Fairgrounds, and some of the parks around.   There's the new place Away for a Day (the old flea market and D&J equipment sales area and there are some Churches with large parking lots that might consider giving us permission to host this event in their parking area.

Support & Connections w/ other County Amateur Radio communities
  • Link or post LAUREL test opportunities.
  • Support W9MDT / Mike's efforts to get GREENE County Emergency Group to a working status.
